On Thursday, January 11th at 7:00 p.m., at District offices at 21040 Marshall Street in Castro Valley, a Solid Waste Services Town Hall meeting will take place to hear your likes, dislikes and concerns as the District begins negotiating for the next solid waste contract to become effective in 2009.
Castro Valley Sanitary District General Manager, Roland Williams stated,
“It’s important to have the community’s input as these
services directly affect each and every resident and business owner. With

We hope to incorporate new ways to address these regulations in the new
contract to accommodate the changing times.”
You’re encouraged to attend the Town Hall meeting. However, if you
are unable to attend and wish to have your comments heard, please email
them to naomi@cvsan.org, write to Castro
Valley Sanitary District, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, CA 94546,

In October 2006, 160 Castro Valley Sanitary District residents brought art made with recycled materials to the District offices, located on Marshall Street, for the 10th Annual Recycled Art Contest. Art was judged based on creativity, use of materials that would have otherwise been trash and environmentally responsible construction.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to view recycled art made by Castro Valley Sanitary District residents! Admission is free and all are welcome. Please see the enclosed flyer for more details. Remember, it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s art piece!

as this! For more information regarding Nike’s ReUse-A-Shoe program,

The event honored the artistic diversity of District residents by allowing art created with any form of media as long as it included a 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot) focus. However, the majority of the 160 entries were created out of salvaged materials (that might otherwise be trash), the contest’s traditional artistic media. Select winning entries were photographed for the District’s 2007 Calendar/Annual Report, to be distributed to over 55,000 residents and businesses.
The entries will be divided into 10 separate categories, with cash prizes of up to $250.00! Prize winning students whose schools are within CVSD or CVUSD will also receive equivalent cash awards for their school.
Official entry forms are now available at District offices located at 21040 Marshall Street and online at www.cvsan.org. Completed entry forms and artwork must be delivered to CVSD between October 2nd - 6th during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Please see entry forms for participant requirements. 1 entry per resident, student, or class. For more information, contact (510) 537-0757.
If you should have any questions, please call CVSD at 510-537-0757.

One of the key goals of Palomares Elementary School’s science program is to enable students to apply what they learn to address real world issues. Come visit a 20-acre natural preserve used as an outdoor learning environment and as a demonstration site for watershed restoration, education, and stewardship.
Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley’s District 4 is partnering this year to promote community building, provide access to County resources, and to reinforce the importance of being environmentally correct in our communities. Besides that, to have a smashing time with food and music!
The 5k Run/Walk will help send the Castro Valley High School Cross- Country Runners Club to the Iolani Invitational meet at Kailua Ranch, Oahu. In this meet the school will compete against over thirty (30) other teams from Hawaii and the western United States. Last year the team successfully competed at the highest level in the California state championship at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Have you “gone beyond the pail” but haven’t had a chance to bring your pail to CVSD for your chance to win? There is still time to participate. The “Pail Bring-Back Program” will continue through August 15th, with dinner-for-two drawings to be held May 16th and August 16th.

Thank you to Palomares Café, Baker’s Square and Don Jose’s
Mexican Restaurant for support of the “Pail Bring-Back Program”.
Castro Valley residents have been participating in curbside food scrap
recycling since 2001. Extending the program to include Castro Valley’s
schools was a logical next step; one that will save Castro Valley Elementary
an estimated $2000 annually.
Utilizing Department of Conservation grant funds, Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) installed ten (10) recycling pyramids on select street cans located on Castro Valley Boulevard and Redwood Road. The pyramids, made of 65% minimum recycled content stainless steel, hold up to forty (40) beverage containers and resist rust and weathering. The street can recycling pyramid pilot program, intended to increase beverage container recycling in the downtown area, will be tracked and reviewed for possible future program expansion.
So if you are away from your home’s recycling bin, recycle beverage containers in one (1) of ten (10) new street can recycling pyramids! To provide program feedback, please contact michelle@cvsan.org or (510) 537-0987.
These local organizations will be partnering to present the Project EARTH 2006 Festival, Community Clean-Up, and 5k Run/Walk on April 29, 2006:
• Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD)
• Palomares Elementary School
• Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley’s District 4

Partners will be presenting the School (site for the Festival) with gardening

Project EARTH 2006 will be composed of an outdoor educational Festival, held at Palomares School, a 5k Run/Walk to benefit the Runners Club, and a Community Clean-Up to clean and beautify Castro Valley!
Community Members:
Do you know of an area in Castro Valley that could use some beautification?
If you have a suggestion for a clean-up or beautification project that could
use more than ten (10) volunteers for three (3) hours, such as a planting
project, graffiti or litter removal, or other outdoor project for the April
29th Project EARTH event, please contact Castro Valley Sanitary District
at (510) 537-0757 by February 10, 2006.
The average American home receives 1.5 trees in their mailbox in the form of unsolicited mail every year. That adds up to over 100 million trees cut down and over 28 billion gallons of water consumed to produce one year’s worth of this country’s junk mail. In fact, every year over $320 million of our tax dollars are wasted on disposal fees due to huge amounts of junk mail.
Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSD) is working together with Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC) and sponsoring the “Junk Mail Reduction Campaign.” The campaign consists of radio commercials, public service announcements, and articles asking Bay Area residents to make a special effort to help reduce the amount of junk mail that comes to their homes and offices.
You can take action to stop this waste by requesting a FREE Stop Junk Mail Kit. The Junk Mail Reduction Kit shows you how to get off junk mailing lists and keep new junk mail from finding its way to your mailbox. The Kit also provides other important information on how to ensure that your name and address don’t get traded, rented, or sold to companies who send you unwanted mail.
Go online to www.StopJunkMail.org or call toll-free, 877-STOPWASTE (786-7927) and request the FREE Stop Junk Mail Kit.
To date, CVSD has donated Clearstream Recyclers to the Castro Valley Youth Soccer League (CVYSL) as well as New Life Christian Church. By taking collected cans and bottles to local buy-back centers, these organizations have both raised money and protected the environment.
Don’t miss your opportunity to take advantage of this unique offer.
Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first served
basis. Some restrictions apply.
Interested groups may pick up applications
at CVSD, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, CA 94546 or download here.
