Announcing CVSan’s High School Scholarship Winner

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) is pleased to announce that Alexa Piscil is the winner of the 2023/24 CVSan Environmental Leader Scholarship! This graduate from Castro Valley High School (CVHS) will receive a $1,000 scholarship award and was recognized with a certificate at CVSan’s Board of Directors meeting on May 7, 2024.

Alexa Piscil has demonstrated her commitment to environmental leadership with her school club and community work. She is currently an Earth Team Intern and the CVHS Smart Environment Club Treasurer while going to school at CVHS. With Earth Team, Alexa has done hands-on service-learning projects that aim to improve the environment and raise community awareness, encouraging students to think globally, connect regionally, and act locally. With Smart Environment Club, Alexa promotes sustainability on campus through school garden volunteering, litter cleanups, and educating students on environmental topics during the Club’s weekly lunch meetings.

In 2022, Alexa received the President’s Environmental Youth Award Certificate of Participation for participating in a community environmental project, and she was recognized as an environmental youth advocate. For Alexa, environmental stewardship means “Working as a team to make an environmental impact, no matter how small or large. It is easy to give into the hopelessness of the environmental issues happening in the world, but I have learned that as environmental stewards, we can take steps to increase awareness and love for the world around us in our communities. The Smart Environment community gives me hope for the future and I hope to see the CVHS garden thriving and growing for future generations to see.”

This is the 11th year that CVSan has offered the scholarship to high school seniors. CVSan proudly recognizes these students for their work to encourage waste reduction and environmental protection within their school and community. For more information, visit cvsan.org/StudentScholarship.
